FAQ – ANN MARGRET LINDELL’S GRANT FOR YOUNG PRINTMAKERS

Question: What is the age range for the grant?

Answer: The grant is aimed at young artists, no older than 40 years old, who work within the field of printmaking. You can apply for the grant up to and including the year in which you turn 40.

Question: What is meant by “graphic expression”?

Answer: The foundation uses “graphic expression“ to mean that one or more graphic techniques play a central role in your artistry. A graphic work may be the result of a project that includes both analogue and digital techniques. It can be part of installations where print meets spatiality, or it might be based on artistic research, such as around concepts like reproduction, duplication and original, or the relationship between image and technology. If you are uncertain, you can study the former recipients of the grant under Archive.

Question: What does “active in Sweden” mean?

Answer: The grant is aimed primarily at young printmakers who work in a way that is linked to Sweden. This could be in regard to their training or exhibitions, or to something else that shows that their artistic production is carried out in Sweden.

Question: Can I apply for the grant if I am a student?

Answer: Yes. You might be a student within an artistic subject.

Question: Can I apply for the grant multiple times?

Answer: Yes. If you have not previously received the grant, you can apply again, as long as you still fulfil all the criteria. If you have previously received the Ann-Margret Lindell Foundation grant, you can apply as long as it has been at least five years since you received it and you still fulfil all the criteria.

Question: How should I describe collective work and activities that include several artists beside myself?

Answer: You can apply for the grant as a group/collective. In that case, name all the people in the group and describe how your collective work is organized and what roles you all have. Instead of submitting a personal CV, you should each state which projects you have previously completed together. Otherwise, the same conditions apply to the application as if you were applying for the grant individually, and all artists need to meet the criteria set by the foundation.

Question: Can I attach several photos if my work cannot be depicted by a single image?

Answer: Yes. You apply for the grant by referring to five art works (5). In order to do justice to different types of works, such as spatial installations or series of images, you can attach several reference images, max three pages (3), of each individual work. Please note that in this case, you also need to highlight these images with the work’s reference number 1-5 in your PDF, so that all reference images can be linked to the correct title and information on the form. It is also possible to attach a moving image as an alternative.

Question: Should the entire application be sent as a single PDF file?

Answer:  Yes. In order to facilitate the handling of the data and to be able to assign each applicant an individual number, you need to collate all the material into a single PDF file. The PDF file must contain:
  • the completed application form with information about you and your art works
  • reference images showing five (5) works with a maximum of three (3) pages per work or links to moving media
  • a detailed CV that also shows the focus and extent of your artistic activities

If you do not have a computer programme to make this collated file, there are free programmes on the internet that can help you.
Name your PDF file: firstname_lastname.pdf

Question: How large can my application be?

Answer: The size of your collated PDF document can be max 20 mb. This size limitation means that you can attach the PDF to an email without any issues in most email programmes.

Question: Can I send a link to the application via an external downloading service?

Answer: No. Attach all information in your application in a PDF format according to the directions in the call for the grant. Links to external downloading services might not work and the jury is not able to follow up to request the completion of your application.

Question: Do I have to attach 5 samples of work?

Answer: No. You can submit a smaller number of samples, but you will allow the jury the opportunity to make a fuller judgement of your artistry if you include more samples.

Question: Can I send additional information after I have submitted my application?

Answer:  No. If for some reason you need to change or complete your application, you must send in an entirely new application before the final date by 1 pm. In that case, the jury will consider the most recently submitted application. If you do this, label your email with the subject “final application”.

Question:  How do I know if my application has been received?

Answer: You will receive a response to your submission where it is stated that the jury has received your application.

Question: How is my application analysed?

Answer: Your application will be analysed digitally.

Question: Who is assessing my application?

Answer:  All applications are assessed by a small jury, which is appointed by an art foundation every year. The jury possesses broad and deep expertise in art and the printmaking field. Every year, a representative from the art foundation is also included in the jury. The jury’s members are named publicly via Grafikens Hus’s channels every spring.

Question:  When will I get a response to a question about my application?

Answer:  The art foundation will respond to any questions about the application process when time permits, and they will reply to questions as soon as they can during the process.

Question: What happens if I get the Ann-Margret Lindell Foundation grant?

Answer: The chair of the foundation will contact you after the jury has completed their task. The foundation generally organises an event in November where that year’s recipients are presented, and the foundation hopes that the recipients will participate. After the year of the grant has passed, the foundation expects the recipients to write a report about how they used the grant.

Question:  Does the jury avoid conflicts of interest and bias?

Answer: Yes. The jury has developed an active, extensive approach to preventing conflicts of interest and bias in every step of the process. Individual jury members do not handle applications where there could be a conflict of interest; instead, they are replaced in these cases by an unbiased expert.

Question: How does the jury handle my personal data?

Answer: The personal and contact information that you include in your application is necessary so that we can check that you meet the criteria of the grant, and for the foundation to be able to get into contact with you if you are named as a recipient of the grant. The foundation saves this information only as long as is necessary for this process. For the applicants who are named the year’s grant recipients, we are grateful to be given the right to use your personal data according to the trustee Grafikens Hus’s legitimate interest in informing others about the Ann-Margret Lindell Foundation grant. Our data protection policy can be read on Grafikens Hus’s website, which is updated according to GDPR.
